Kitchen Gardens — from the White House to the playgrounds of our most deserved schools

Former White House pastry chef Bill Yosses has embarked on the food adventure of his life! Working with a host of Master Gardeners, acclaimed chefs all of the country and scientists from top universities,  Bill is taking the vegetable garden he knew and loved at the White House and laying it down next to the […]

Welcome to the Kitchen Garden Laboratory

Founded by former White House Executive Pastry Chef Bill Yosses, Kitchen Garden Laboratory uses the triad of food and cooking (Kitchen), planting and growing (Garden) and scientific experimentation (Laboratory) in its education programs to promote delicious, nutritious eating for better health outcomes, as well as foster food and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) literacy.

What makes the Kitchen Garden Laboratory special is we use cooking as a prism to help students understand science – and conversely, science as a way for kids to understand healthy eating and nutrition.

The role of the garden is as a living laboratory for teaching children (and adults) basic science. As they grow and cook their own food, the children learn about soil science, botany, the role of bees and insects in pollination, agricultural science, nutrition, math, physics, soil science and chemistry.
